During the 30th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is currently taking place in London this December 1st, Chile was re-elected as a member of the Council of the Organization in Category C, which is aimed at ensuring high levels of safety and efficiency in maritime navigation and protection of the marine environment and coastal zones. Our country was elected with 126 votes, which is a recognition of Chile's leadership in the Council of that body.
Chile has been a member of the IMO Council uninterruptedly since 2001 and, since its incorporation in 1972 into the International Maritime Consultative Organization, now IMO, has ratified the main international maritime conventions and their respective protocols and amendments, while complying with the requirements of the "Global Maritime Security and Relief System", through an extensive maritime radio-communications network.
