The Government of Chile values the resolution of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to grant house arrest to the political leader Leopoldo López, who had been imprisoned at Ramon Verde prison since 2014.

Chilean Government hopes that this measure will soon translate in Lopez unconditional release. If so, the Government expects his freedom represents a step towards a believable dialogue between the Venezuelan Government and its opposition, all in pursuit of an agreement that will allow the normalisation of the democratic constitutional order.

Likewise, the Government of Chile trusts that the unconditional release of compatriot Braulio Jatar is also decided upon, as he has been held under house arrest since May 24th, after spending eight months in prison.

Chilean Government reiterates the necessity of the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to uphold the guarantees applicable to the arrest of any person, for it is compelled to fulfil them in accordance with the Human Rights International Treaties it has subscribed. The Government of Chile will continue to observe the development of events in our fellow country.
